Pain changes everything.
SFMA Level 1 — Selective Functional Movement Assessment
A 2-day movement diagnostic system course delivered by Greg Dea — the licensed SFMA instructor for Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.
Hosted at Movement Therapy, Picton
Dates: July 4th and 5th 8am-5pm
Investment: AUD $1,695

Why SFMA Level 1?
Proper diagnosis is the first step to effective treatment.
This course teaches a movement-based diagnostic system and provides healthcare professionals with an efficient and systematic tool to reach a comprehensive movement diagnosis.
For clinicians who want to:
-
Improve diagnostic clarity in painful patients
-
Identify the true source of pain — not just where it presents
-
Move beyond local treatment approaches
-
Apply a structured, repeatable assessment system in everyday clinical practice
What is SFMA Level 1?
The SFMA fills a clinical need to assess for stability, motor control, and mobility dysfunctions.
The SFMA is a clinical assessment for patients who experience pain. It is a movement-based diagnostic system that systematically finds the cause of pain — not just the source — by logically breaking down dysfunctional movement patterns in a structured, repeatable assessment.
When a patient presents with shoulder pain, the immediate course of action isn't always to assess the shoulder. The symptoms may simply be the result of a problem elsewhere in the body. The SFMA focuses on underlying dysfunctional movement to find the cause of pain, not just the source. This concept is known as regional interdependence — how seemingly unrelated problems are actually driving the dysfunction. This applies not just to shoulder pain, but all musculoskeletal pains.
What makes SFMA unique?
SFMA is the first organized system that takes into account altered motor control — the inability to coordinate proper movements. This system allows clinicians to identify the correct problems — mobility versus motor control — and to be best equipped for successful clinical outcomes.
Unlike many mobility-focused treatment systems, SFMA introduces a methodology for reprogramming motor control. Using a neurodevelopmental perspective — the way we learn to move as infants — clinicians learn how to reteach the brain to communicate with the body.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
List the seven Top Tier tests of the SFMA and identify the criteria for rating each test as functional or dysfunctional
-
Describe the significance of pain provocation during the examination process and how pain alters normal motor control
-
Distinguish functional and dysfunctional movement patterns when observing real clinical video case examples
-
Perform a complete SFMA evaluation including all breakout components
-
Analyze the results of the SFMA to correctly identify and prioritize physical impairments for treatment planning
-
Design a rehabilitation intervention program that addresses key SFMA findings
-
Evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation by comparing results of the SFMA re-assessment
